THE ENGAGEMENT
From compliance risk toconfident capability.
The Australian market is full of experiential learning, motivational keynotes, andgeneric competency workshops. Here's what they're missing.
WHAT WE DO
We partnered with John Holland's Sustainability and Climate teams to design, develop, and deliver a customised Sustainability Program combining eLearning and instructor-led training. The program was purpose-built to raise enterprise-wide awareness of sustainability opportunities and embed best practices into everyday project decisions. Rather than abstract theory, we anchored the training in John Holland's own award-winning projects — Green Star, Carbon Neutral, and Infrastructure Sustainability Council case studies that demonstrated sustainability in action. Participants could see exactly how the principles applied to the kind of work they were already doing, which made the shift from awareness to behaviour change far more natural. The program covered focus areas including certification schemes, sustainability tools available across the project lifecycle, and practical approaches to embedding sustainable practices in a built environment context — from early design through to delivery.
WHAT CHANGED
Ninety-eight percent of participants rated their satisfaction with the classroom experience as high. The facilitator score came in at 96%, and 91% said they'd recommend the program to a colleague. But the real shift was in how people started thinking about their work. Employees across all divisions developed a shared understanding of what sustainability means for John Holland, their clients, and the communities they build in. Project teams gained practical tools to deliver sustainability outcomes — not as an add-on, but as part of how they approach every phase of a build. As General Manager of Strategy Michael Hooper put it: "A competitive and professional approach to building training, with significant experience in learning design and delivery. We are very happy with the high quality service offering."
WHY IT WORKED
The program worked because it was built from John Holland's world, not a generic sustainability curriculum. Real projects, real certification frameworks, real decisions that people on site and in the office face every day. That specificity is what turned a training program into a genuine capability shift across 5,000 people — at speed, and at a return of $153 per employee. When your commitment to sustainability is public, ambitious, and tied to global targets, you can't afford for it to live only in strategy documents. John Holland made sure it lived in their people.
